Altered Books

  • 610 E North Foothills Dr Spokane WA 99207 (map)

Cost: $20
You've been told your whole life not to write in books. In this class that's not true. We will create art from books that would otherwise enter the waste stream or gather dust on your shelves. This creative reuse art form is easy to learn and a great way to process life. During the class you will learn about creating poetry by adding or removing text already on the page. Participants can use any media that works with paper, and we will focus on collage, watercolor, acrylic, markers, pencils, fabric, and mixed media.

Materials: Bring a book you want to mark up. (Old Nora Roberts novels and cookbooks are fantastic!) If you don't have a book handy, check a Little Free Library in your neighborhood or email the instructor. (optional: Bring pictures and ephemera that are meaningful to you)

About the Instructor: Hey, I'm Anna (she-her). I live in Spokane. Creative practice is how I make meaning and stay grounded. I quilt with fabric from our library's recycling program, make collages, and write. My mother liked to tell people that my kindergarten teacher had said I was the most creative student she'd taught in a thirty-plus year career. A few months after my mother died, I started improv. It taught me how to say yes to uncertain moments and build something with people who were strangers five minutes ago. In a very real sense, improv taught me how to laugh again. I have two children, a teen and a tween. Family fun includes camping, Dungeons and Dragons, and me refereeing disagreements after the wifi goes off.
